Silk Painting - Tropical Flowers & Original Designs
Discover the luminous beauty of silk painting while creating your own tropical flower silk roundel inspired by the colors and botanicals of Hawaiʻi.
Artist Karen Thrasher will guide you through the fundamentals of painting on silk, including transferring a design, applying resist, blending transparent dyes, and building vibrant layers of color. You'll begin by learning and experimenting with these techniques before creating your own finished botanical piece.
Choose from designs inspired by plumeria and other tropical flowers and foliage, and make the piece your own through your choice of color, composition, and individual details. Students are also welcome to bring photographs or other botanical inspiration to explore when developing their piece.
Your design will be painted onto silk stretched within a circular frame, creating a beautiful roundel that highlights the translucent quality and brilliant color of silk dyes.
Once your painting is complete, the silk will be steamed in class to permanently set the dyes. You'll then finish and mount your silk roundel, leaving with a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork ready to display.

What to bring
A $15 materials fee, payable directly to Karen Thrasher at the workshop, covers the silk, dyes, resist, and other materials needed to complete your roundel.
You're welcome to bring your own design or inspiration. A simple hand-drawn design in pen or pencil on paper works well, or bring an image, photograph, or other inspiration that you would like to trace or adapt for your silk painting.
Please also bring a brown bag lunch and bottled water. We’ll take a short lunch break while the silk pieces are steamed to permanently set the dyes.
Level
No prior experience is necessary. All levels are welcome, from curious beginners to practicing artists looking to experiment in a supportive studio environment.
Location
