Weekday, 1 day | 2 hr session
Capacity: 10 participants maximum.
Learn the traditional art of coconut palm weaving with Uncle Dan in this hands-on introduction to making a pāpale, or woven hat.
The workshop begins with approximately 30 minutes devoted to safety, selecting and preparing coconut palm leaves, and learning how the material is handled for weaving. Uncle Dan will demonstrate how the leaves are prepared and share the techniques needed to get them ready for your project.
For the remainder of the workshop, you'll work alongside Uncle Dan as he guides you step by step through weaving your own coconut palm pāpale pikoʻole, or crownless hat.
This is a wonderful introduction to working with natural materials and experiencing a practical weaving tradition that has been passed from one generation to the next.
All coconut palm materials will be provided.
Please come prepared to work with fresh coconut palm leaves.
Long pants are required to help protect your legs while handling and preparing the leaves.
Gardening or work gloves to protect your hands.
A sharp pocket knife or utility knife with a fresh razor blade, if you have one. Please do not bring serrated knives or scissors. We will have some knives available to work with if you don’t own one.
Closed-toe shoes are recommended.
Water bottle recommended.
The first portion of the workshop will cover safe handling and preparation of coconut palm leaves before weaving begins.
No previous weaving experience is necessary.
