1 weekend per week | 3-hour sessions

Discover the joy of working with clay in this welcoming, hands-on course designed for beginners and anyone looking to build a strong foundation in hand building.
Over six weeks, you'll learn essential ceramic techniques with teacher Linda Preskitt, while creating a collection of functional and decorative pieces. The course begins with pinch pots, coil construction, and vessel building before progressing to soft slab techniques using a slab roller, molds, and slump molds to create bowls, platters, and tripod cups. Along the way, you'll explore surface decoration techniques. As your skills develop, you'll move into leather-hard slab construction, carving, and assembly to create boxes and other sculptural forms.
During the final class, you'll glaze your bisque-fired work and learn finishing techniques before your pieces are glaze fired and prepared for pickup at a later date.
Throughout the course, you'll gain confidence working with clay while learning fundamental techniques including:
Surface decoration
Pinch and coil construction
Soft slab building
Slab roller, molds or hump and slump molds
Leather-hard construction and carving
Attaching and assembly methods
Glazing and finishing
Designed to build lasting skills rather than just complete projects, this course is ideal for anyone who wants to develop greater confidence, refine their technique, and establish a strong foundation in the art of hand-built ceramics.
Includes a weekly 3-hour open studio session (schedule to be determined) for additional practice and project completion.
Participants will need to purchase:
12lb bag of clay - $35
Participants are encouraged to bring:
Basic clay tool kit
(needle tool, metal rib, feather pin, sponge, fettling knife, clay cutter wire, chamois, )
These will also be available for purchase from Spur for $25.
Apron or clothes comfortable for working in
Small towel
Sketchbook or notebook for ideas and notes
Optional textures or objects for imprinting into clay
(lace, leaves, fabric, stamps, etc.)
Communal studio tools, glazes, and firing are included unless otherwise noted.
No prior experience is necessary. All levels are welcome, from curious beginners to practicing artists looking to experiment in a supportive studio environment.
