Beginning Wheel Throwing
3-hour class, once a week for 6 wks + (3) 3-hour independent Open Studio practice sessions | $360
Capacity of 6 students
Discover the art of wheel throwing with ceramics instructor, Kawika, in this six-week introductory course designed for students with little to no ceramics experience.
Each three-hour class begins with an instructor-led demonstration introducing a new technique or skill. From there, students have plenty of hands-on studio time to practice, experiment, and work at their own pace, with individual guidance and feedback from the instructor. The last class will be a chance for students to finish up glazing, rather than a formal demonstration.
Over six weeks, students will learn the fundamentals of preparing clay, centering and throwing on the wheel, trimming, attaching handles, surface decoration, and glazing.
What You'll Make
Students will work toward creating a small collection of functional ceramics, including:
Bowls: Learn to center clay, open forms, and shape the walls of a bowl.
Cups & Tumblers: Practice pulling even walls and creating cylindrical forms.
Mugs: Build on cylinder-making skills by trimming, shaping, and attaching handles.
Small Dishes: Explore shallow forms, foot rings, and surface decoration.
Vases: Explore taller form making.
Students may complete up to 10 finished, glazed pieces during the course, depending on their progress. The emphasis is on developing foundational skills and craftsmanship rather than producing a large quantity of pottery.
Six-Week Course Outline
Week 1: Introduction to the Wheel
Studio etiquette and safety, wedging, centering, and throwing your first forms.
Week 2: Bowls & Surface Design
Explore bowl shapes, proportions, textures, and decorative techniques, trimming foot rings, and refining pieces.
(1st Open Studio)
Week 3: Cups, Mugs & Handles
Practice throwing cylinders to create cups and mugs. Learn to make and attach handles, with an introduction to hand-building techniques that complement wheel-thrown pieces. Continue trimming and refining pieces.
(2nd Open Studio)
Week 4: Vases, Tall Cylinders
Practice bringing height to your pieces and techniques for manipulating the form on the wheel.
(3rd Open Studio)
Week 5: Finishing & Glazing Fundamentals
Refine selected work, explore glazing techniques, and learn how to prepare pieces for firing.
Week 6: More Glazing
Finish glazing your bisque pieces for a final firing.
By the end of the course, students will have developed an understanding of the wheel-throwing process and the foundational skills to continue exploring ceramics independently.
Tuition includes instruction, use of studio tools, commercial glazes, and firing for up to 10 selected pieces. Additional pieces may be fired at a cost, pending Spur approval. Finished pieces will be available for pickup after the final glaze firing.
